Sauna Before or After a Workout? What to Know
Timing your sauna session around a workout can change how it feels and what it's best suited for. Here's how the two compare.
Sauna Before a Workout
A short sauna session before training can help warm up muscles and may make you feel looser going into your workout. The tradeoff: heat exposure before intense exercise can affect performance and stamina, especially in longer or more demanding sessions, since your body is already managing heat stress before you start.
Sauna After a Workout
This is the more common approach. Using a sauna after training is commonly associated with muscle relaxation and a sense of recovery, once your workout itself is already done and performance isn't a factor anymore.
What to Consider Either Way
- Hydration matters more around workouts — you're losing fluid through both exercise and sweating in the sauna
- Give your body a few minutes to cool down after exercise before adding sauna heat on top
- If a workout was especially intense, listen to your body — skipping the sauna that day is fine
The Bottom Line
For most people, sauna after a workout is the more practical and comfortable choice, while a brief pre-workout session can work if you specifically want a warm-up. See our sauna products.
