Hydrogen Water vs. Alkaline Water: What's the Difference?

Hydrogen water and alkaline water get lumped together a lot, but they're genuinely different things.

What Alkaline Water Is

Alkaline water simply has a higher pH than regular water. It's typically made by adding minerals or through a filtration process that raises pH. The core idea behind alkaline water is about acidity/pH level.

What Hydrogen Water Is

Hydrogen water is regular water infused with extra dissolved hydrogen gas (H2). It's not primarily about pH at all — a hydrogen water bottle typically produces water that's close to neutral pH, with the added hydrogen gas being the actual point of the product.

Why They Get Confused

Some hydrogen water devices also happen to slightly raise pH as a side effect of the electrolysis process used to add hydrogen, which is likely where the confusion comes from. But the products aren't interchangeable, and marketing that treats them as the same thing is oversimplifying.

Which Should You Choose?

If your interest is specifically in molecular hydrogen as an antioxidant, look for a device that clearly states dissolved hydrogen concentration (usually in ppm), not just pH level. A high pH alone doesn't tell you anything about hydrogen content.
